I am the happy owner of an adopted cat. I was originally going to foster a cat for the Vinton Animal Shelter while they were undergoing repairs or it was adopted by a nice family, however I quickly changed my mind once I got my cat home. The first day I brought home Gardenia I left her in the kennel for a while so my two other cats could see and smell there was a new friend in the house, Of course my two cats couldn’t do anything but hiss, which is to be expected (while I let her sit in the kennel my boyfriend and I decided to come up with a...

Jennings was brought to the shelter almost 3 years ago this summer. He showed up at a guys house that already had 2 labs and was not looking for a third. This gentleman’s last name was Jennings, hence the name. This yellow lab was so beautiful and soulful that I was certain someone would be coming for him. A phrase that we use to say often when we were new to managing the shelter. Jennings bent the fencing in the dog yard at the shelter and disappeared. Sonia and I drove all over looking for him with no luck. A guy brought him to the shelter...

I just wanted to let you know that Novia has adjusted well and has not missed a beat of making himself at home! He loves to sit under our ping pong table and air hockey table. If one of us sits down with in a few seconds you can expect to have him on your lap. He even did rounds this morning and woke up the kids for me. Apparently when he heard my alarm and seen me up he decided everyone should be up. They thought that was pretty funny. We are very happy he picked us!! Thanks again, The Karrs

I am writing this update regarding my new companion, Sammy a.k.a. Jake. I met Sammy at DogAFair 2011 and remember the times when people walked up to me and asked me how much he cost to adopt, and I found myself telling these random people that he wasn’t for adoption. It seems crazy now that I think about it, telling people he wasn’t for adoption, because I had already secretly claimed him as mine. Enough rambling though. Sammy and I have had our fair share of fun since that faithful day. The best part about this story, believe or not, is...

We adopted Brenda, but renamed her Sheba Jo. She is the sweetest dog we have ever had. She always lets us know when she needs to go out side and always enjoys her treats when she gets done with her walk. We usually keep her in her kennel when we go to work, and she just lays down and goes to sleep. Once in a while we let her have the run of the house and she is so well behaved she just lays down on the bed or sofa. We feel so lucky to have found Sheba as she does what ever she can to make us happy. She always greets us and is so...

Friends of the Shelter, Inc. is a private non profit animal shelter and we also manage the Vinton/Benton Animal Shelter. Many improvements have been made at the Vinton Shelter and we are excited about the future of animal care and adoptions. Our board members, volunteers, and supporters (past and present) have worked towards that goal for years and will continue to do whatever we can to help the homeless and abandoned pets of Benton Co.
Some of Friends of the Shelter’s adoptable cats are available at the Adoption Center at PetSmart in Waterloo, IA.
